Will the power go out tonight?

You shouldn't have to find out when the lights go off. We watch the grid all day and tell you when it's in trouble, whether your neighbourhood is next in line, and how much time you have.

  • See it coming. Some days the grid has room to spare. Some days it doesn't, and it shows hours before anyone loses power. Charge the phones, fill the tank, run the laundry, get the ice — while it's still a choice instead of a scramble.
  • Find out if it's your turn. When they start cutting power they don't take the whole island at once. They go neighbourhood by neighbourhood, in an order that almost nobody outside LUMA can see. Tell us where you live or work and we'll show you where you fall in that line — and how close it is to reaching you.
  • Get a heads-up, not a dark house. Enough warning to shut the computer down properly, keep the fridge shut, move the meeting, and check on the neighbour whose oxygen concentrator needs a wall socket.

5 August, 4:51pm. Twenty-eight neighbourhoods in the dark at once — and it moved across the island for the next four hours.

That evening a generator failed at 4:31. The first neighbourhoods went dark at 4:51. Twenty minutes of warning existed, sitting in public data the whole time.

Nobody got it. That's the gap this closes.

This is a crowd-sourced project

Most of what you see here is scraped from LUMA and Genera. But the official feeds have holes only people living here can fill — and the more homes reporting, the better this works for everybody on your feeder.

  • Nobody publishes voltage. Brownouts and the quiet voltage reductions that happen before a rotation are invisible in every official source. A smart plug in your kitchen sees them.
  • Nobody publishes line frequency. 60 Hz means generation is keeping up with demand. A sag means it is not, seconds before anything else shows it.
  • Nobody publishes who actually went dark. The official map shows which feeders are scheduled to shed. Whether your street really lost power, and when it came back, is known only to you.

You can contribute with a $20 smart plug, or with nothing but a phone — reporting “my power is out” during a rotation is one command and genuinely useful. Your readings are never shown with your name or address attached.
